Herpes is a viral infection caused by herpes simplex 1 or 2. Herpes simplex type 1 is usually found on the mouth in the form of a cold sore or fever blister. Herpes simplex type 2 is usually responsible for outbreaks in the genital region. It is possible, however, to have type 1 in the genital area and type 2 on the mouth. Herpes is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases. The herpes virus generally infects the mucosal tissue of the vagina, penis, or anus through a process called viral shedding.
HSV 1 & 2 IgG EIA
Used to establish past exposure to herpes, the HSV 1 & 2 IgG EIA is a type specific antibody test for herpes simplex. This test can completely rule out exposure to herpes simplex 1 & 2 and can be administered with or without herpes symptoms.
Herpes Simplex IGM
This test can establish recent infection with herpes simplex, although it does not distinguish between type 1 or 2. IgM antibody is the initial, very large, primary antibody that is produced to try and destroy antigen quickly. This test can establish recent infection with herpes, but may overlap with production of IgG antibodies.
